Retreat

In a world of noise, confusion and conflict, it is necessary that there is a place of inner silence and peace, not the peace of mere relaxation but the peace of inner clarity and love.

Our Need for Retreat...

Miroslav Vajdić for openphoto.net

In the ever-increasing demands of the lives we live, there is a need to find solace; a time and space for inner quiet.

Solitude and silence helps us learn - again - Who I am before I was a ______ (my job), or a ______ (my roles)?  We all need a free and engaged place in which we can hear our own longings, our own needs, and reconnect with or rekindle our hope.

One of the gifts of this kind of silence and solitude is that it can help us stop thinking and “just look” (contemplation) or "just be."  It is an opportunity to meet our own soul again exactly as we are.  A retreat grants us permission to get out of our head, to let go of explanations and certitudes, out of our need to know, or our desire to fix, solve, or figure things out.

One of the core components of this kind of silence is a deeper sense of attentiveness that is difficult to find in a busy, noisy life.  In the words of poet Mary Oliver, "paying attention is the beginning of devotion.”

Afraid that our inner light will be extinguished or our inner darkness exposed, we hide our true identities from each other. In the process, we become separated from our own souls. We end up living divided lives, so far removed from the truth we hold within that we cannot know the ‘integrity that comes from being what you are.’
